Maths

INTENT

The purpose of mathematics in our school is to develop:

  • competence and confidence in fluently using and applying mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills
  • an ability to solve problems, to reason, to confidently communicate with one another and to ask and answer questions
  • a positive attitude and growth mind-set underpinned by a culture of taking risks and understanding that mistakes are a part of learning
  • an ability to make connections across mathematical ideas
  • an ability to use and apply mathematics across the curriculum and in real life
  • Mathematical language from the beginning of their learning to support their understanding and to help them discuss their own learning. Children are encouraged to talk about their learning in full sentences to consolidate their understanding and share their reasoning
  • an understanding of mathematics through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations

We aim to provide a stimulating and exciting learning environment that takes account of different learning styles and uses appropriate resources to maximise teaching & learning. We have a good range of resources in each classroom to support the children’s learning. Children have access to these resources at any point and are encouraged to use them or draw pictorial representations to help them to solve problems for themselves.

T'he maths leader is experienced and provides effective support and guidance to staff which includes bespoke support for individual teachers based on monitoring outcomes. The mastery approach is well embedded throughout the school.
Teaching is supported by the White Rose scheme and supplemented by the Ready to Progress (RtP) materials from NCETM. Teaching for recovery has been focused on number and the small steps informed by RtP are having an impact on closing the
learning gaps. This is demonstrated well in pupils’ books. Books are well presented and there is evidence of progress with a considerable amount of work to support assessment.'

'The school have begun implementing the mastering number programme in Early Years and KS1 in Term 5. Lesson drop ins evidenced pupils being able to confidently use the rekenrek approach to demonstrate and talk about number bonds to 10,
the use of the equipment was well embedded as was the call and response approach. Staff should be commended on embedding this approach rapidly, pupils were enthusiastic and focused. Teaching ensured fidelity to the programme with
support staff, including student teachers, deployed effectively to support learning. The school has invested in more resources to support the initiative which will enable all classes to have adequate numbers of resources to enhance learning.'
